The NPI (personal identification number) is the key to almost every Beninese formality: passport, taxes, criminal record, digital identity. The ANIP BJ app, published by the National Agency for the Identification of Persons (ANIP) and downloaded more than 500,000 times, lets you find your NPI in a few minutes, then pay for and download your civil status records. Here is how to use it, including from Belgium.

Find your NPI without travelling
You were registered during the RAVIP but have lost your receipt? There is no need to request a duplicate any more. The “Retrouver mon NPI” (find my NPI) feature gives it back to you using your surname, first names, your mother's name and your date of birth, or your RAVIP receipt number if you still have it. The NPI certificate (FID) that confirms it is free.
Never been registered? There is no online enrolment: you must attend a RAVIP operation in person. ANIP has already held one at the Liège consulate, in 2023, for Belgium and neighbouring countries: read our article on the RAVIP mission in Liège and follow our news for the next one.
Documents and their official prices
In July 2026 ANIP reminded the public that its fees are fixed, with no extra charges:
- secure birth certificate: 1,000 FCFA;
- personal identification certificate (CIP): 1,000 FCFA, valid for two years;
- NPI certificate (FID): free;
- marriage certificate, death certificate, birth certificate with marginal note, certificate of residence, certificate of custom and celibacy: 2,000 FCFA each;
- biometric identity card: 6,000 FCFA, valid for five years, to be collected in person.
Most documents can be downloaded as soon as payment is confirmed. The identity card and data corrections go through manual validation. The certificate of residence first requires a form from the neighbourhood or village chief.
Using ANIP BJ from Belgium
Everything depends on the phone number linked to your NPI: that is where the login code is sent. The interface accepts foreign numbers and, for them, offers to deliver the code by phone call rather than by text message. Facial recognition login is also available. Card payment, added in July 2025, means you do not need a Beninese Mobile Money account.
If the registered number is an old Beninese number you no longer have, update it with “Modifier mon numéro” (change my number) in the app, which works without logging in. The USSD code *151*1# only works with a Beninese SIM card.
The records you obtain are often needed for formalities in Belgium: remember legalisation when the Belgian authorities require it.
Checking that a record is authentic
The “Vérifier un document” (check a document) feature checks a birth, marriage or death certificate, a certificate or an FID issued by ANIP. This is useful for an employer, a public authority or a notary who receives a Beninese document and wants to make sure it has not been forged.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find my NPI online?
In the ANIP BJ app or on eservices.anip.bj, under “Retrouver mon NPI” (find my NPI): enter your RAVIP receipt number, or your surname, first names, your mother's name and your date of birth.
How much does a birth certificate cost on ANIP BJ?
1,000 FCFA for the secure birth certificate, 2,000 FCFA with a marginal note. The NPI certificate is free.
I am not receiving the login code. What should I do?
The code is sent to the number linked to your NPI. If it is out of date, use “Modifier mon numéro” (change my number). Otherwise, try again later, choose the phone call option for a foreign number, or contact ANIP on WhatsApp at +229 01 48 50 00 00.

Yes, card payment has been available since the July 2025 version, alongside Mobile Money.
How do I get an NPI if I live in Belgium?
You must be enrolled in person during a RAVIP operation: ANIP holds them from time to time in Europe, including one in Liège in 2023. There is no online enrolment.
Can I request my child's birth certificate?
Yes, if the phone number linked to the child's NPI is registered. The app also lets you update that number.
