Vodun

Benin is recognised as the cradle of vodun, a system of beliefs and practices that shapes a significant part of social and spiritual life. The national vodun festival on 10 January is a public holiday that draws visitors from around the world to Ouidah.

Royal arts

The Royal Palaces of Abomey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, house bas-reliefs, appliqué hangings, thrones and recades recounting the history of the twelve kings of Dahomey.

Music

Angélique Kidjo, a multiple Grammy Award winner, carries Beninese creativity onto the international stage, alongside artists such as Gnonnas Pedro and Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou.

Cuisine

Beninese cooking is built on maize, yam, cassava and fish: pâte rouge, amiwo, akassa, groundnut sauce and bean fritters (ata) are among its emblematic dishes.
