Presidency of the Republic

The President of the Republic is both Head of State and Head of Government, elected by direct universal suffrage.

Benin is a presidential republic. The President of the Republic, elected by direct universal suffrage, is both Head of State and Head of Government. The President upholds the Constitution and guarantees national independence and territorial integrity.

Powers

  • Sets and conducts the policy of the Nation.
  • Appoints the members of the Government, who are accountable to the President.
  • Promulgates laws and ensures they are enforced.
  • Is the supreme commander of the armed forces.

The Vice-President

Since the 2019 constitutional revision, the President is elected together with a Vice-President, who deputises and succeeds in the event of a vacancy.
