A Beninese-born anaesthesiologist, Dr Benoît AKANDO has represented the Republic of Benin in Liège since 2016, with jurisdiction over the whole of Wallonia.
Honorary Consul of Benin in Wallonia
Appointed by the Government of Benin and recognised by the Belgian authorities in 2016, Dr Benoît AKANDO is the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Benin in Liège. His consular jurisdiction covers the whole Walloon Region, as stated in the official list of honorary consulates published by the Belgian Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs.
He was officially installed on Saturday 17 September 2016 by the Ambassador of Benin to Belgium, H.E. Charles Borromée TODJINOU, with the opening of the consulate premises at Mont Saint-Martin 84 and the presentation of the seal and exequatur at the Liège Congress Centre. He succeeded Mrs Micheline CHARLIER.
A physician serving the community
A medical doctor specialising in anaesthesia and intensive care, Dr AKANDO heads the intensive care unit at Klinik St. Josef in Sankt Vith. Born in Benin, he has long been involved in Beninese community associations in Belgium.
His duties as consul
- Represent Benin before local authorities and the consular corps.
- Assist Beninese nationals in Wallonia with their formalities.
- Provide consular protection within the limits of international law.
- Promote trade, economic, cultural and scientific cooperation between Benin and Belgium.
